A study to develop a programme to help men make decisions about their treatment for prostate cancer

Please note - this trial is no longer recruiting patients. We hope to add results when they are available.

Cancer type:

Prostate cancer

Status:

Phase:

This study is about developing a decision making programme to help men decide what treatment is best for them. It is open to men whose prostate cancer is contained within the prostate gland (localised prostate cancer). And it is unlikely to grow or spread for at least a few years (low or intermediate risk prostate cancer).

More about this trial

Your doctor will talk to you about possible treatments when you are diagnosed with prostate cancer. But the decision about which treatment to have is yours. And it can be a difficult decision to make. This is because it involves weighing up the possible outcomes of the treatments and the impact of these on your lifestyle.

We know from research that how your doctor presents each treatment plan may influence your final decision. And the way each treatment is presented may not answer any concerns you have about them. If your concerns aren’t adequately addressed then you can’t make an informed decision.

We also know that decision making tools can help you by giving a better understanding of the treatment and the risks involved.

In this study the team aim to put together and assess a programme that better informs men about their treatment choices and the risks involved.

Who can enter

You may be able to join this study if all of the following apply

  • You have prostate cancer that is contained within the prostate gland (localised prostate cancer)
  • Your cancer is unlikely to grow or spread for at least a few years (low or intermediate risk)
  • You are able to answer the questions in the questionnaire by yourself

Trial design

The researchers need 260 men to join.

The researchers may ask your permission to audio tape your clinic appointment with the doctor. This is so they will know what information and support is given when treatment is talked about.

You fill out a questionnaire when a decision is made about the treatment or management of your cancer. Then again 8 months after you had agreed to take part in the study. The questions will be about your decison regarding the treatment or management of your cancer.

It will take about 10 minutes to complete. You can return the questionnaire to the researcher at your next clinic appoint. Or you can return it by post in the pre paid envelope provided.

You may also be contacted to take part in an interview. You will be asked about the quality of information you received about the treatment. And what support you were given when making your decision. If asked you don’t have to do the interview. You can still take part in the study.

Hospital visits

There are no extra hospital visits if you take part.

If you agree to take part in the interview this will be arranged at a time and place convenient to you.

Side effects

There are no side effects to taking part.
