This study is looking at the relationship between personality and the impulse to smoke cigarettes or e-cigarettes (vapes).

It is open to people who:

  • use nicotine products
  • used to use nicotine products
  • do not use nicotine products

More about this trial

Cigarettes contain many different chemicals that are harmful to health. This includes nicotine. This is an addictive chemical and is thought to be one of the reasons that people find it difficult to give up smoking. Other products such as vapes also contain nicotine.

Previous research has looked at whether some aspects of personality might influence the need to smoke. This study wants to get a more complete understanding of this relationship.

To do this, the team are looking at 4 factors of your personality that might influence your smoking behaviour.

The first is your ability to be aware of and adapt to various experiences while choosing to act in ways that reflect your values. This is called psychological flexibility.

The second is your ability to manage your emotions and respond effectively. This is called emotional regulation.

The third is the belief that engaging in a behaviour will lead to a certain outcome, whether it is good or bad. This is called outcome expectations.

The fourth is the likelihood to act on a whim. While displaying behaviour that shows little or no consideration of the consequences. This is called impulsivity.

The aim of the study is to get a better understanding of the relationship between personality and nicotine addiction. These results may help health professionals in the future to work out the best ways to help people give up smoking.
