A message from Julie

Just like that, we’re halfway through this anniversary year. No matter the campaign, or weather, I see a remarkable collection of people volunteering in our shops. We’ve had a record-breaking June and you've helped us fundraise more than £400,000 for children and young people. Thank you.

We’re working to create a world where people can live longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer. We have recently been reminded of the importance of this goal with the news that supporter Dame Deborah James died last week. You can read our tribute below.

Let’s keep doing our best and let’s do it with rebellious hope.

Take care,

Julie

An icon of 20 years

Celebrating 20 years of time

This year marks 20 years since Cancer Research UK was formed. That’s 20 years of extraordinary researchers making lifesaving scientific discoveries. And 20 years of extraordinary people – like you – donating your money, skills, and time to enable them to do that. Whether you’ve been volunteering with us for 20 days, or 20 years, we are so grateful. The time you collectively give adds up to great things.

This is the story of volunteering from 2002 to present day. Of minutes and days which turn into months and years. The story of our 33,000 time-givers. You.

Michelle Mitchell visits Jersey store

Our Chief Executive, Michelle, found out about life on the shop floor at our St Helier shop during her first visit to Jersey.

Wearing a £15 Whistles dress bought from a Cancer Research UK shop, Michelle met staff and volunteers as part of celebrations for our 20th anniversary this year.

“It was a real pleasure to go to the St Helier shop, meet Carina and her volunteers, and thank them for all they do for Cancer Research UK."

We’ve seen some wonderful nominations come in for our annual volunteering awards. If you have a fellow volunteer in mind, there’s still a little time left to put them forward. Submitting a nomination is of course entirely voluntary, but if you’d like to get involved then we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Below you can read about our 2021 winners of Shop Volunteer of the Year – awarded for their outstanding support and dedication to their shop, shop manager and fellow volunteers. All the details about nominating are on the Flame of Hope website.
