What is Parliament Day?

It’s a campaign moment that takes place every other year in the heart of Westminster. Our Campaigns Ambassadors come together for a morning of learning and development, a campaign moment and an afternoon influencing their MPs in Parliament en masse.

This Parliament Day will be a day full of activity; a chance to catch up with your campaigning community, join in with the next stage in the Smokefree UK campaign, and of course meet your MP in the heart of Westminster!

Travel and expenses

We will cover all reasonable travel expenses in line with our policy and guidance.

As soon as we’ve confirmed your place, go ahead and book your train tickets – the sooner the better whilst they’re cheaper! Make sure you keep your receipts (physical and/or digital) as you'll need them for your claim. You’ll get an expenses claim form at the event.

If you need us to book travel for you, please let us know.

At the Campaigner Conference, some Ambassadors canceled very close to the day – some even on the day – which cost the charity money. Please remember that most travel is non-refundable and we can only cover your expenses if you attend.

MP Meetings

There's absolutely no need to worry about booking a meeting with your MP at Parliament Day, we'll be doing this for you, and we’ll copy you into the email.

Of course, we can’t control MP diaries. We hold Parliament Day on a Wednesday to give us the best chance as most MPs are in Westminster to take part in Prime Minister’s Questions, but we can never guarantee that they’ll be free to meet you at Parliament Day. Usually, most Ambassadors get meetings but if you don’t, don’t worry –  we’ll still have so much more for you to get involved in.

The Campaign

Some of you have been meeting your MP in your constituency as part of our Turning Point for Cancer campaign activity. Within the first 100 days of the new parliament, this was a chance to meet your MP for the first time, introduce them to the campaigning we do and talk about our 5 Longer, better lives pledges.

At Parliament Day, you’ll focus your conversations on the Smokefree UK campaign. None of us can predict politics – remember Parliament Day rebranding to the Campaigner Conference because of politics just a few months ago? But it’s highly likely we’ll be at a critical point in the campaign with the Tobacco & Vapes Bill working its way through parliament.

Prepare for Parliament Day

Parliament Day 2024 is one day only. We’ve got a lot to squeeze in and not as much time as usual to help you prepare for your MP meetings. So, instead, we’ll be sharing useful resources and hosting some online learning ‘drop-in’ sessions.

1. Read your Information pack and Smokefree UK Campaigns Toolkit

See links at top of page. We’ve also popped some in the post if you asked for a printed copy.

2. Watch these sessions:

  • Smokefree UK: campaign update At Parliament Day we will be campaigning for a Smokefree UK. Watch to hear about progress since the launch in July 2022, and what's planned for Parliament Day.
  • Storytelling webinar our campaigning starts with your story. Hear how fellow Campaigns Ambassadors Amy, Steve, Patrick, Penny and Sue share their stories with impact and their top tips for meeting your MP.
  • Influencing your MP webinar Edited recording from June's Campaigner Conference (note: campaign focus for Parliament Day will be Smokefree UK - see your campaign toolkit). Get to grips with how to engage your MP ahead of your upcoming meeting and hear more top tips straight from our Public Affairs team and the MPs themselves.
