Relay For Life Peterborough 2024

Relay For Life is an international movement of over four million Relayers, taking part in 6,000 Relay For Life events across the globe. Together, we’ve raised over $6.5bn as a worldwide collective to beat cancer. 

Entry to Relay For Life is free and teams of friends and family fundraise for world-leading cancer research. Then, we unite as a collective at a weekend festival to remember loved ones, honour everyone affected by cancer and celebrate the progress we’re making.

Team members take it in turns to complete an activity, whether that be walking laps of a track, routes through a park, or some other challenge. No matter your age or abilities, Relay welcomes everyone - every step and every participant counts. There are also countless other ways to participate in your local Relay event, connect with your community and celebrate your fundraising achievements.

Each Relay is organised by a dedicated local volunteer committee delivering an incredible event of celebration and remembrance. We honour Survivors of cancer, our special guests. 

We enjoy a variety of games and music from talented local performers. It's an event for the whole family to enjoy where you can also learn about Cancer Research UK’s scientific breakthroughs. 

As darkness falls, Relayers gather for the Candle of Hope ceremony. The event becomes a sea of flickering lights as we take a moment to reflect and honour everyone affected by cancer. 

Finally, no Relay For Life is complete without the closing ceremony which celebrates our progress and inspires us all to continue our efforts to beat cancer.

The Candle of Hope ceremony is a poignant part of Relay For Life. As the sun sets, candles are carefully lit, each one honouring a life touched by cancer.

Everyone is invited to join in this special moment. You can dedicate a candle to someone no longer with us, a friend or family member currently living with cancer, a loved one who has survived, or as a symbol of hope for the future - a world where everybody lives longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer. 

Gather with your local community as we come together for a moment of quiet remembrance, reflection, and celebration. During a Relay For Life event, you'll experience special moments that bring everyone together:

•    Teams take turns to walk for the duration of the event, showing the power of community spirit to help beat cancer. 
•    We enjoy a variety of games and music from local performers – there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

•    The Candle of Hope ceremony gives us a moment to reflect and honour everyone affected by cancer. 
•    The closing ceremony celebrates our progress and inspires us all to continue our efforts to beat cancer.

Team up with your family, friends and colleagues, then join Relay For Life and embark on an incredible fundraising journey that will make a real difference. Everyone is welcome to be a part of this inspiring journey, regardless of age or fitness level.

Start a team - Bring together 8-15 family members, friends or colleagues and get the kids involved too. Set a team goal and lead your team to fundraising success to power research. Team Captains must be over 18, but once you're registered, anyone can join your team.

Join a team - Know someone who’s starting a team? Join them and encourage others to do the same! You’ll have fun and an amazing sense of achievement as you smash your fundraising target ahead of an event to remember. 

Take part as a Survivor - Anyone who has ever lived with cancer is invited to join the celebrations as our special guest. Survivors lead the festivities and begin the walk with a Lap of Honour, inspiring others with incredible strength. Survivors can also join or start their own team.

What's the nearest station?

The nearest station is Peterborough. Please check public transport before you travel.

Is there parking?

Yes, public parking available nearby in city centre car parks.

Can I buy food and drinks on the day?

Yes, you can. You are also welcome to bring along any food and drinks that you might like with you.

What happens if it rains?

We will Relay on! Please come prepared for wet and cold weather.

What do I need to bring with me?

Your Relay t-shirt and if the event is overnight, please bring a tent and sleeping bag. You might also like to bring any food and drinks, a chair, sun cream, an umbrella (just in case!), warm clothes, spare socks and shoes, and any materials that you need for your fundraising stall (e.g. a gazebo and trestle table).

Each year, Relay For Life achieves something truly remarkable – raising over £1 million for life-saving cancer research. Every penny raised makes a difference.  

£4 buys a kilo of dry ice, which keeps delicate biological samples at the right temperature while our scientists perform their experiments.  

£50 buys a microscope lens, meaning our scientists can focus on the small details that could help us beat cancer. 

Cancer Research UK runs an invaluable resource called Cancer Chat – an online, moderated discussion forum available 24/7. This platform provides a safe space for anyone seeking to discuss various aspects of the disease. Running this vital service for our 115,000 members costs around £400 each day.
