Vaginal cancer is the 28th most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with around 120 deaths every year.

 

Vaginal cancer mortality by age

Mortality rates for vaginal cancer in the UK are highest in people aged 90+, with around 8.5% of all vaginal cancer deaths occurring in this age group (2021-2023).

 

Vaginal cancer mortality trends over time

Vaginal cancer mortality rates in females have decreased by more than two-fifths (44%) in the UK since the early 1970s, and rates have remained stable in the last decade (2021-2023).

 

Vaginal cancer mortality projections

Vaginal cancer mortality rates in females in the UK are projected to increase by 8% between 2024-2026 and 2038-2040, with around 160 deaths each year by 2038-2040.

 

  • Mortality rates for cancer of other female genital organs (which includes vaginal cancer) in the UK are 64% higher in the most deprived quintile compared with the least.
  • Around 180 deaths from cancer of other female genital organs each year in the UK are linked with deprivation.
