Francesca Forsyth, Sports Event Volunteer

University student, Francesca, is one of our amazing volunteers who gives up her time to cheer on our runners at some of the most iconic sporting events in the UK.

“Like so many people, cancer came into my life at a young age when my aunty died of lung cancer. Since then, I always knew I wanted to support Cancer Research UK to help the many others who will go through a similar loss.”

What Francesca does

“After taking part in Race for Life for several years alongside my mum and sister, my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. I wanted to do more to help and be part of the charity on a bigger scale.

I decided to be a cheering volunteer for both the London Marathon and Windsor 10k run, which then led me to be a team leader at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival. There’s always an incredible atmosphere at the events and it’s amazing to feel like your support is helping runners cross the line!”

Francesca’s volunteering highlights

“Supporting Cancer Research UK has become a really big part of my life, and I’ve since been inspired to get involved with other opportunities with the charity, such as volunteering in Cancer Research UKs offices. Working alongside a team who are all working hard to help such an amazing cause has definitely been a highlight so far.

When I joined University, I also quickly decided to get involved with a society called ‘Students Kick Cancer’, working closely with Cancer Research UK to help raise vital money for research. Our most notable event so far was our Christmas Ball. All the guys turned up in suits and the girls were in their best dresses and– not your typical university night out! – and it was really nice to see everyone really go for it.

It’s been so uplifting to see so many people support the charity, and that in return gives so much support to those affected.”
