This study is taking blood samples and tissue swabs from inside the nose from people who are taking part in a lung health check programme. For example, the NHS Lung Health Check.

It is open to people from Manchester, Southampton and Yorkshire.

More about this trial

Lung Health Check is a service offered by the NHS. It aims to diagnose lung cancer at an early stage when treatment is more successful. As part of the check you might have a CT scan Open a glossary item of the lungs.

Researchers think they might be able to diagnose lung cancer using blood samples and tissue samples taken from inside your nose (nose swab).

In this study they want to take these samples from people who are a part of the Lung Health Check.

The aim of the study is to find out whether using these samples, as well as the CT scan results, helps to improve the diagnosis of lung cancer.

Please note, you won’t benefit directly if you take part in this study. But it might help other people in the future.

Who can enter

The following bullet points are a summary of the entry conditions for this study. Talk to your doctor or the study team if you are unsure about any of these. They will be able to advise you.

Who can take part

You may be able to join this study if you are taking part in a targeted lung health check programme, such as the Targeted Lung Health Checks (TLHC) in Manchester, Southampton or Yorkshire.

Who can’t take part

You cannot join this study if you are not fit enough to give blood samples or a nose swab. Or if there is any other reason your doctor or the study team think might affect you taking part.

Trial design

The study team need 10,000 people from Manchester, Southampton and Yorkshire to take part.

You have a routine Lung Health Check test. You then might have a low dose CT scan as part of the Lung Health Check programme

You give a blood sample. A trained health care professional will collect some cells from inside your nose using a soft brush. You can give these samples on the same day as your Lung Health Check.

The team plan to use the samples to look:

  • at genes Open a glossary item to understand more about lung cancer
  • for substances called biomarkers Open a glossary item to help predict who might develop lung cancer

The study team also want to keep your CT scan results if you have a scan. They may decide to use this for future research if you agree.

When the study has finished, your blood samples are stored. These samples may be used for future research.

Hospital visits

There are no extra hospital visits if you take part in this study.

Side effects

Taking blood can sometimes cause discomfort and bruising.

You might have some slight discomfort when you have the swabs inside your nose.
