In November, the Patient Involvement team proudly hosted CRUK’s annual Cancer Insights Panel Social – a day dedicated to connection, reflection, and celebration of the incredible contributions made by people affected by cancer.
This special event, hosted in Cancer Research UK’s head office in London, brought together members from all four Cancer Insights Panels, many meeting in person for the first time. It was a chance to say a big thank you and to show how much their voices matter.

The day began with a vibrant marketplace session, where CRUK teams showcased their work and shared how panel feedback has shaped projects. Conversations flowed over lunch, setting the tone for an afternoon of inspiration.
Ian Walker, Executive Director of Policy, Information and Communications, opened the event by reaffirming why hearing the voices of people affected by cancer is critical to CRUK’s mission. We were delighted to introduce Suki Westmore, our new Head of Involvement, who shared her vision for amplifying lived experience in everything we do.

Before moving into breakout activities, Patient Involvement Officers El Mawer and Gabriele Osella led a heartfelt celebration of the panels’ achievements over the past year – from shaping research priorities to improving patient-facing materials. Their words captured why this community is so special: “Your input motivates everyone at CRUK. You help us stay connected to our mission, listen more deeply, communicate more clearly, and act more boldly.”
Breakout sessions gave members space to share personal cancer stories and reflect on what involvement means to them. Many spoke about the importance of transparency and hearing tangible outcomes of their contributions – a powerful reminder to keep closing the feedback loop.
Jo Harby, Director of Information and Involvement, closed the formal part of the day with warm words of appreciation before everyone headed to the café for an informal social with pizza and nibbles – a relaxed ending that encouraged genuine connection.

This annual social is more than a celebration of partnership and purpose – it’s a powerful reminder that patient involvement goes beyond listening and learning. Our Cancer Insights Panel members actively shape and influence CRUK’s work, ensuring that decisions, strategies, and priorities reflect real lived experience. As the saying goes: “Nothing about us without us.”
A huge thank you to every Cancer Insights Panel member for your time, honesty, and commitment – and to all colleagues who supported the event and joined the marketplace. Your contributions helped make the day a success.
