Update your Will with a codicil

You can update your Will to include a gift without writing a new one. Find out how to use a codicil to add a gift to your Will.

What is a codicil?

A codicil is a supplementary legal document that lets you to make minor amends to a Will without needing to rewrite the original document.

Typically, codicils work well if you want to:

  • adjust the value or recipient of a gift (including adding gifts to charities)

  • appoint a new executor, trustee or guardian

  • alter funeral arrangements

How to use a codicil

Just like a Will, a codicil must be signed and dated by the person who made the Will and witnessed by two independent people to be considered legally valid.
