Diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers has dramatically improved, but many patients still fail to respond to treatment, suffer from relapse, or die from their disease. In Dundee, Dr Kasper Rasmussen is studying the epigenome of blood cancers. Epigenetics is the study of the many chemical compounds that tell the genes what to do, and when something goes wrong in this process, it can lead to cancer. By understanding more about what happens at this biological level, scientists could find more targeted treatments for blood cancers and improve survival.
We’re exploiting cancer’s genetics to create new therapies. When cells divide during normal growth, the genetic material is replicated and then split into two identical cells. Sometimes the copying system breaks down or malfunctions, introducing lots of errors. This causes cells to multiply in an uncontrolled manner, leading to cancer. In Dundee, Professor Karim Labib is investigating the mechanisms inside cells that can cause the genetic copying system to malfunction in cancer. He wants to find and exploit weaknesses in this system to stop cancer in its tracks. This research could lead to the development of new cancer treatments, allowing more people to survive their disease.
