Meet some of our Technology Team
Tosha | Digital Producer
I joined CRUK because I was looking to become part of an innovative charity making a real difference to people’s lives. After two years in CRUK’s high value fundraising, I moved into the Digital Production team through a year-long secondment.
Since becoming a Digital Producer, I have learnt so much about technology’s role in shaping the way the charity operates. I have been exposed to many new and exciting digital products and benefitted from the insight of different tech specialisms along the way. I am also surrounded by extraordinary colleagues and mentors who continually support my learning and career development.
Most Memorable Experience: In my second month as a Digital Producer, I was asked to facilitate a sprint, with guidance from a team of digital experts. During the sprint week, I learnt a number of new problem solving techniques and ways to engage people, whilst producing some meaningful outcomes. It felt incredibly satisfying and I am still applying the learnings from this experience to my work today.
Sade | DBA Team Lead
Like many people, I have lost some close friends and family members to the illness. As such, when the chance to work for CRUK came along, I seized the opportunity to contribute my own little bit to this worthy cause.
I joined CRUK November 2018 as a SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) with over 19 years of managing different flavours of Relational Database systems in Retail, Finance and Engineering environments.
My role involves: managing the entire CRUK Database System, making sure the databases are available for use by the entire organisation, providing support to technical and non-technical teams on database matters, making decisions that are most compatible to maintaining a productive Database environment, sharing knowledge with my team and other teams and much more!
Most Memorable Experience: Becoming the DBA Team Lead just six months after joining. This is proof that everyone is given so many opportunities to grow and develop at whatever pace they wish here.
David | UX Designer
I joined CRUK because I had previously worked for another charity and wanted to continue utilising my skills a great cause. I also felt that being exposed to the innovative ways of working at CRUK, I would learn and develop a lot professionally.
The User Experience (UX) team is pivotal in ensuring we understand the needs of our supporters and employees and build tools and services which meet these. I have been particularly involved in the Future of Work programme, which entails enhancing employee work experiences to enable more flexible and collaborative working. I feel that my experience here has not only refined my UX research skills but also improved my "soft" skills greatly.
Most Memorable Experience: I have loved working in diverse teams and upskilling those with no previous experience in UX approaches and techniques. It makes me particularly happy when I hear that people are applying these skills learnt on new projects!
Chris | Content and Search Lead
I joined CRUK to work somewhere where my knowledge and experience could contribute to a good cause, keep me feeling challenged, and where I could enjoy a great work life balance.
As the Content and Search Lead, I lead a team which helps people across the charity take a more strategic approach to their digital content and communications. And I get home early enough to put my children to bed every night.
Most Memorable Experience: In the last three years my team has trained over 350 people on writing for the web, content strategy, SEO fundamentals and taxonomy. It’s been really exciting to see people take the things we’ve taught them and apply them to the content they produce, and the way they work.
Simeron | Software Engineer
I joined CRUK because I wanted to put my coding skills to use for a cause which makes a difference to people's lives. I also wanted to build on my skills as a developer and work with great people.
As a developer, I work in an agile environment with mainly React and Drupal. I build new features and fix bugs to create better user experiences on technology solutions such as: the CRUK, Race for Life and Stand Up To Cancer sites.
Most Memorable Experience: Attending school events on behalf of Cancer Research, as through this, I have been able to: create coding workshops to introduce students to coding and development, give students a better understanding of technology for the future and educate them on how we use technology here at Cancer Research.
Ben | Digital Production Lead
I was drawn to working here as the idea of my work contributing towards a worthy cause has always appealed to me and this role seemed really exciting.
My vision for the Digital Production team is to make it a ‘home’ for all Early Tech Career talent. I aim to achieve this through fostering a team environment for people to thrive, be empowered and equipped with a multi-method skillset to enable their success in a variety of tech roles.
Most Memorable Experience: Taking part in the Stand Up to Cancer boxing contest. I trained twice a week from 5:30am for the six weeks prior to the contest. It was so satisfying to see the amount of money raised and to be crowned the winner of it!
Mitul | Enterprise Support Manager
I joined CRUK thirteen years ago as I did not see a future for myself in the engineering company I was working for. I had also lost family to cancer so I wanted to contribute to this cause.
The people at CRUK are friendly and approachable yet hold themselves accountable for delivering results, which makes for an enjoyable and collaborative environment.
I lead the Enterprise Platforms Support team which in essence is being a guardian of the production environment. We ensure the smooth running of all Enterprise platforms, including maintenance, and support for online applications and more!
Most Memorable Experience: Being one of two permanent staff members involved in a project, which merged three CRM systems within CRUK into one.
Giulia | Service Design Lead
I joined CRUK from a large publishing company. I joined here because I wanted to use my skillset and expertise in an organisation not only at the forefront of digital thinking, but with a strong sense of purpose. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel motivated and challenged. I also have a great work life balance; I work four days a week and flexibility here is the norm rather than the exception.
I lead the Service Design team in advocating a human-centered design mindset across the charity. My team co-create new or improved services with our staff and communities. We facilitate change through design and engage a lot with supporters, patients and researchers during the process.
Most Memorable Experience: This summer, I organised and facilitated our first two unconferences, which brought together over 20 charities to talk about what digital means to our sector. This was an incredible reminder of how far the sector has progressed in this conversation over recent years.
Matt | Information Security Advisor
When I moved from Malaysia to the UK, none of my educational or professional experience in Information Security was enough to obtain a corporate job. Therefore, my main motivation for joining CRUK was that I felt I would be given the chance to prove myself here. I was also drawn to working here, having previously fundraised for cancer charities.
I joined as a Design and Delivery intern. In just six months, I acquired a position in the Information Security team. This is testament to the friendly and supportive work environment here; people want to give you time and opportunities. My role involves: analysing security vulnerabilities and advising or acting on these, carrying out supplier validations and delivering security awareness training.
Most Memorable Experience: This was when I successfully acquired a position in the Information Security team. It meant so much to me after the challenging journey I had been on after moving from Malaysia.
Georgina | Senior Integration Developer
I joined CRUK after a long career break during which I had two children. I was drawn to CRUK because it offered me a safe, friendly work environment and the flexibility to fit my work around my two children under 3 at the time! It has been a year since I joined and the way I have built my confidence so quickly is testament to the supportive culture.
As a Senior Integration Developer in the Engineering team, I work with a variety of applications. This keeps my job interesting on a daily basis. My role can involve: making design decisions, upgrading software toolsets, proposing improvements to applications and following through changes to implementation.
The social atmosphere is also really great! My team has frequent team nights out, lunches and we even ran the Race for Life together this year.
Most Memorable Experience: Jogging the 10k Race for Life with my team and raising over £3000.
Raj | Senior Quality Assurance Manager
I initially joined CRUK as a contractor from a consultancy and when I had finished working with CRUK as a client, I really missed it. Therefore, shortly after, I acquired a permanent role here. It is such a special place to work; I have not experienced a work culture like this anywhere and It is so satisfying that my work makes a difference to a worthy cause.
Since leading the Quality Assurance (QA) team,it has evolved greatly. QA has been embedded from the start to finish of the software delivery lifecycle. Testing has been largely automated, open source tools are used where possible and we have gone from heavy to little reliance on contractors. This has all achieved significant cost savings.
Most Memorable Experience: The Stand Up to Cancer Indian lunch which our team has organised for the last two years. We are the CRUK team which has raised the most money from an individual fundraising event two years in a row.
Avin | Emerging Tech Exploration Lead
I joined CRUK from the private sector. I wanted to bring passion and positivity back into my work. CRUK was my choice because its mission centres around making a meaningful difference to people's lives.
When I joined, I led a pursuit exploring how emerging technologies could be most impactful within the charity. It became clear that Robotic Process Automation (RPA) could solve the greatest challenge facing teams: insufficient time and resources. I was empowered to take the lead on this idea and we are now in proof of concept.
I work for a corporate now. I agonised over leaving CRUK but as a single mother, I needed to do this. However, I feel fortunate that my employer allows me to dedicate one day a week to delivering the CRUK RPA initiative.
Most Memorable Experience: Getting the RPA initiative to proof of concept and delivering a talk at the Women in Silicon Roundabout conference.
