Breakthroughs: Prevent

Stopping cancer before it starts.

A world where more cancers are prevented

We’re uncovering more cancer risk factors and developing new measures to prevent the disease. We want fewer people to hear the words ‘you have cancer’.

Meet Alison

I’m incredibly grateful to the scientists that have given me and my daughter a future. Thanks to research, I’m looking forward to seeing Mila grow up.

Cancer vaccines - where are we?

Cancer vaccine development has had many challenges. But with recent breakthroughs, new partnerships and current clinical trials, could we be closer than ever?

Li-Fraumeni Syndrome and the start of precision cancer prevention

With our funding, Professor Sarah Blagden is testing a drug that could change the lives of people with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome - who have a higher risk of cancer than almost anyone else.

Preventing cervical cancer by stopping HPV

Our research has helped almost eliminate cervical cancer in younger women in the UK. Now we're working towards a future where almost no one develops the disease at all.

Our work in BRCA

We helped discover why breast cancer can run in families. Then we used that knowledge to find new ways of preventing and treating the disease. Here's how.

Our biggest breakthroughs in prevention

With over 120 years of research, influence and information, we’re driving progress in cancer prevention.

Millions

We helped prove the link between tobacco and cancer, preventing millions of deaths worldwide.

90%

Our research led to the development of the HPV vaccine, which is expected to prevent up to 90% of cervical cancers in the UK.

1 in 400

Our scientists helped uncover the most famous cancer genes, BRCA1 and 2. Around 1 in 400 people have a faulty BRCA gene, which increases the risk of certain cancers. Now, people can get tested and manage their risk to help them stay cancer-free for longer.
