Happy Volunteers’ Week!

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re saying a huge thank you to our volunteer community for everything you do to support Cancer Research UK.

We’re celebrating Volunteers’ Week

An annual UK wide campaign that recognises the power and impact of volunteering.

1 - 7 June is Volunteers' Week. We wanted to use this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our incredible volunteer community and celebrate the vital role you play in helping us beat cancer. Every hour you give helps make our life saving research possible, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything you do.

To mark the week, we’ll be shining a light on the difference you make across Cancer Research UK – from keeping our shops running smoothly and powering our events, to supporting our Cancer Awareness Roadshows and campaigning for change.

A huge thank you from Cancer Research UK

A special message from our Chief Executive, Michelle Mitchell.

Michelle has recorded a special video message to say thank you for your outstanding contributions and to celebrate the progress we’ve made together over the past year.

You make an extraordinary difference in so many ways.

Why we volunteer

Behind every breakthrough is a passionate community of people, united by one goal: to beat cancer.

We know that every supporter has their own motivation for supporting the charity, whether driven by a personal experience of cancer or motivated by a desire to give back or make a difference in your local community – and every single one of you makes a meaningful difference.

Three of our incredible volunteers share what inspires them to get involved.

Meet Danica

Events volunteer Danica, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Cancer Research, was among those volunteering at this year’s London Landmarks Half Marathon.

Danica wears a hi-vis jacket and is standing outside at an event.

From the energy of the runners to the support from the crowds, it was a powerful reminder of how many people come together with a shared goal: to push forward progress in cancer research and improve patient outcomes.

Meet Minnal

Minnal joined Cancer Research UK in 2023 as one of our Story Volunteers, inspired by her personal experience of breast cancer.

Minnal running through a Race for Life finish line, wearing a pink 2023 Race for Life t-shirt.

I enjoy being able to tell my story to raise awareness and inspire people to support Cancer Research UK’s work. It feels rewarding to know that sharing my personal story can reach a wide audience and potentially encourage donations or participation in events.

- Minnal

Meet Andy

In December 2015, Andy pledged 24 hours of volunteering through Radio One’s ‘One Million Hours’ campaign. Ten years on, he remains an invaluable member of the Derby Albert Street shop team.

Andy stands behind the till of a Cancer Research UK top, wearing a Stand Up to Cancer t-shirt.

I lost my mother in 2015 after she battled cancer three times. Seeing the impact on families when they lose a loved one to the disease made me want to help.

- Andy

Celebrating you: introducing our Volunteering Excellence Awards!

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re also delighted to announce that we’re launching a new volunteer awards programme.

Our Volunteering Excellence Awards open for nominations this week, giving staff the opportunity to recognise and nominate our most exceptional volunteers . We can’t wait to read their nominations and hear about all the amazing ways you support Cancer Research UK.

If you’re nominated, the team will be in touch to let you know. Winners will be selected by our panel of judges over the summer and announced later this year.

Growing our volunteer community

Volunteers’ Week is the perfect opportunity to try volunteering for the first time. If you know someone who might be interested, why not encourage them to explore the volunteering opportunities on our website? Whether you help out for a few hours at an event or take action online from the comfort of your own home, there are lots of ways to get involved and make a real difference. And if you’re keen to give a different volunteering activity a go, or explore a new area of our volunteer community, take a look at the opportunities page yourself or speak to your staff contact to find out more.
