Our research nurses

Our senior research nurses play a vital role in driving improvements in patient care and bringing new treatments to patients through clinical research.

Supporting patient-centred clinical trials

With their unique skillset and expertise, our senior research nurses work closely with patients to facilitate the delivery of high-quality clinical trials.

As an essential link between research teams, health professionals and patients, they champion a patient-centred, inclusive research environment and advocate for the impact of clinical research across the NHS.

We fund 15 senior research nurses based in hospitals in Belfast, Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Southampton and Wales.

They work closely within our research infrastructure, including our centres, clinical trials units, experimental cancer medicine centres and other research nurses.

Roles and focus areas of our research nurses

Our research nurses play a vital role in raising awareness, recruiting patients and facilitating the delivery of clinical trials within the NHS. With expertise across all phases of oncology research, they provide valuable support and advice in the design and delivery of clinical research projects.

The research nurses provide a unique insight into the challenges faced by people affected by cancer, helping to shape patient-centric and inclusive research.

Our nurses drive the delivery of our research strategy locally by:

  • raising awareness of the value of research as a core aspect of NHS business

  • providing expertise and leadership in clinical research, nursing and the wider Cancer Research UK community

  • implementing and supporting innovative approaches to delivering cancer trials

  • engaging with the research workforce locally and nationally

  • working with colleagues to identify and deliver opportunities to demonstrate the impact of research
