If you are part of a research committee we collect data directly from you when you submit information to us to be part of the research committee through application forms, conflict of interest declarations, and professional biographies you provide. Additional data may be gathered during committee activities, including meeting attendance, scoring of applications, and feedback provided during discussions. We may also obtain information from you from publicly available sources (e.g. institutional websites, academic publications, ORCID profiles) to verify credentials and affiliations. CRUK may also receive personal data from third parties, such as nominators or referees, when committee membership is proposed or reviewed. If you are part of a fundraising committee, we collect these details from you when you sign up to join a specific fundraising committee. This is usually from the Cancer Research UK website. If you are a Trustee or non-Trustee committee member, we collect these details from you when you apply directly to Cancer Research UK.
CRUK uses the personal data of research committee members to support the effective governance and administration of its research funding programmes. This includes managing committee membership records, scheduling meetings, and facilitating communication between members and CRUK staff. Data is used to assess and monitor potential conflicts of interest, ensure transparency in decision-making, and uphold the integrity of the peer review process. Members’ professional expertise and feedback are used to evaluate research applications and inform funding decisions. Additionally, CRUK may use anonymised or aggregated data for internal reporting, audit trails, and to improve committee operations. All uses of personal data are aligned with CRUK’s mission to fund high-quality research. When you become part of a fundraising committee, your information is used to help with the running of your group. This will include making sure that you receive messages when needed, that you are signed up to the correct events, and, if you are the Relay Chair to make sure you have access to the systems you need to administer your events. If you provide us with your cancer story, we will always ask for permission before using this publicly (see acting as a story volunteer section for further details). As part of your Trustee/non-Trustee role, Cancer Research UK will use your details firstly to make sure there is no reason why you cannot be appointed - as part of these initial checks, the charity may search online for publicly available information about you. If successful, your information will also be used to register your appointment with Companies House, the Charity Commission and Isle of Man regulators and to enter your details into internal distribution lists. Your information will be used to conduct diversity monitoring across the group of Trustees/non-Trustees, and your biography and photograph will be uploaded onto the Cancer Research UK website for transparency with the public.
