Cancer support services – privacy information

This page applies if you use Cancer Research UK’s cancer support services, including our nurses’ helpline or the Cancer Chat forum.

What we collect

We might ask you for the following details, some are optional.

  • Your name

  • Your contact details (including postal address, telephone number, e-mail address and/or social media identity)

  • Age (optional)

  • Ethnicity (optional)

  • Cancer detail/history

  • Location – town/county (optional)

  • Username

  • Call recordings

How we collect it

Cancer Information Nurses may receive personal information about your health when you speak with them, email them, or contact them by post. We will also collect these details when you submit your details via an online webform for direct contact with our cancer chat nurses.

How we use it

We provide services to support individuals affected by cancer, and we collect personal information to deliver these services. This includes our Cancer Information Nurses and our online forum, Cancer Chat. See the section on Cancer Chat for more information on how we use your information there. Our Cancer Information Nurses use this information to respond to your questions. Your queries may be recorded for training, quality monitoring, and service evaluation purposes, and will be stored securely. Information you provide will not be used for any other purpose and will not be shared with anyone else without your explicit permission, or because required by the nurses’ professional code of conduct or by law. Your details will be stored in our secure platforms as a record of communications with you, and for auditing purposes. Your data will be retained in accordance with our retention policy and securely deleted once it is no longer required.
