Cancer researchers – privacy information

This page explains how Cancer Research UK uses personal information if you apply for, receive, or are involved in research funding or related research activities.

What we collect

We might ask you for the following details, some are optional.

  • Your name

  • Your contact details (including postal address, telephone number, e-mail address and/or social media identity)

  • Position

  • Employment status and role type (e.g. permanent, fixed-term, fellow, student)

  • Institution/organisation

  • Equal Opportunities data, including gender, disability, age, religion, and socio-economic status.

  • Qualifications, experience

  • Salary data

  • Details of your research area or project focus

  • Information about your involvement in CRUK Institutes or Centres, including job title and department

How we collect it

We will collect these details from your online application form via our online platform when you apply for a grant from Cancer Research UK. Your details may also be submitted on your behalf by a lead grant applicant with your consent. We may also collect your details on an externally facing expression of interest form or other online webform for other joint funding opportunities. For potential grantees not yet formally applying, data may be collected via pre-application engagement activities, such as workshops, webinars, or networking events.

How we use it

We will use the personal data you share with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in connection with your application and, if successful, in connection with the Grant and Grant Activities for the purposes of:

  • Administering and evaluating your application

  • Funding the application if it is successful

  • Monitoring and managing the performance of the Grant and associated activities

Your data may be shared with CRUK affiliates and external experts for these same purposes. It may also be used for knowledge-sharing, training, and general business process or strategic impact reviews. Any publications resulting from these reviews will only include application data in an aggregated and anonymised format.

We may disclose your personal data to:

  • CRUK affiliates

  • Host Institutions and other collaborating institutions

  • External peer reviewers, experts, and appointed advisors

  • Government and regulatory authorities

  • Higher education funding councils and other research organisations

  • Funding bodies, commercial or non-commercial partners, and donors or potential donors

These disclosures will be made for purposes connected to the application and/or the award, administration, and funding of the Grant, as well as for CRUK’s research communications, publicity, or commercial activities related to the Grant or Grant Activities. Your data may also be used in the course of inviting or managing donations or partnership commitments to support this or similar applications. Your details will be stored in our grant management system as a record of both submitted and awarded funding applications. Your grant will be managed through this system, which will also be used for communication and maintaining funding records. Your data will be retained in accordance with our standard retention policy and securely deleted once it is no longer required.
