Campaigners and story volunteers – privacy information

This page explains how we use personal information if you campaign on behalf of Cancer Research UK or share your cancer story with us.

What we collect

We might ask you for the following details, some are optional.

  • Your name

  • Your contact details (including postal address, telephone number, e-mail address and/or social media identity)

  • Your date of birth

  • Your gender

  • Your ethnicity

  • Your connection to cancer

  • Your cancer experience

  • Treatments you received, including if you took part in a clinical trial

  • Your background / family history

How we collect it

We collect these details from forms on our website which hold your information safely. You may also share this information directly with CRUK staff during conversations or formal interviews. We ask that you only share this information if you are very comfortable to do so and consider the wishes of any family members or friends you want to tell us about.

How we use it

Your details are passed to our dedicated Media Relations, Cancer Stories or Campaign teams. These are specialist teams at Cancer Research UK who will look at the information you have provided and get in touch with you if they can see available opportunities that would suit you. There will be times when the Cancer Stories team spots an opportunity to share your story with the media – this would usually be with a journalist to include in a newspaper or magazine article. They would need to share your name and cancer story with that external party and may require your address if a photographer would be attending to take photos of you. The team would only share your data with media and photographers with your specific consent, and you would be able to withdraw that consent at any time. If the Cancer Story involves a child, the team would similarly only share information with the consent of a parent or carer. We have agreements in place with our photographers to make sure that images are handled appropriately. The Cancer Stories team may also share your story internally with other teams at Cancer Research UK to include in other places, for example, an email about an event, or to provide to one of our corporate partners. The team will always seek your consent in these circumstances too.
