This page explains how we use personal information for advertising, analytics, and similar technologies, and how you can control these activities.
Our website might include links to other websites, plug-ins or applications. If you click on these, the other sites might collect or use your personal information. We don’t control what they do, so it’s a good idea to read their privacy policies when you leave our site. We use your personal information to show you adverts that are more relevant to you on websites, apps, social media, and smart TVs. This might happen through things like 'Like' or 'Share' buttons, or by giving trusted platforms a list of email addresses or phone numbers to help show or hide our adverts. Sometimes, we also share donation details to help find people similar to our most generous supporters. We only do this if you’ve agreed to receive marketing from us. These platforms are only allowed to use your information to show our adverts, and they delete the data when it’s no longer needed. We believe it’s fair to personalise our adverts this way. If you’d rather we didn’t, you can contact us at 0300 123 3379 or preferences@cancer.org.uk. You can also change your settings on social media, apps, or smart TVs to stop seeing targeted adverts.
We also use something called 'Advanced Matching' on platforms like Facebook. This means that if you do something on our website, like make a purchase, your name, date of birth, or contact details might be sent to Facebook through a tool called a pixel. Facebook turns this into a code and deletes your details after 48 hours.
We work with Google Analytics to show you adverts about our work and to make your experience of our website better. Google Analytics (GA4) can link your details, like your age and gender to you if you are signed into your browser with a Google account and have turned on the ‘ad personalisation’ feature. If you decline advertising cookies on our website, we will tell Google not to link your personal details with Cancer Research UK’s Google account. This means we will not be able to identify you. Any information about age, gender or location that we see in Google Analytics is viewed by Cancer Research UK in the form of statistics and trends – we cannot identify you personally from this information.
Cancer Research UK receives data from Experian, specifically around their Mosaic product. Experian has created Mosaic segments which groups consumers together into groups based on their behaviours, lifestyles and other characteristics, which then help organisations understand consumer behaviours. CRUK uses this data to segment its supporters to ensure that you only receive communications from us that are more likely to be of interest to you. We also use this information to ensure that targeted advertising is more relevant to you. For more information on how Experian uses your data, please check their Privacy Policy page: https://www.experian.co.uk/privacy/privacy-policies
