About Cancer

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the prostate gland. Treatments might include surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. You may not need treatment straight away.

What is prostate cancer?

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system, and is at the base of the bladder. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Trans women and non-binary people (who are born male) can get prostate cancer.

Risks and causes of prostate cancer

Your risk of developing prostate cancer depends on many things including age, family history and ethnicity.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

Prostate cancer doesn't usually cause any symptoms in the early stages.

Getting diagnosed with prostate cancer

You usually start by seeing your GP. They ask about your symptoms and examine you. Your GP then decides whether to refer you to a specialist.

Tests for prostate cancer

You have a number of tests to check for prostate cancer. These may include a digital rectal examination, a PSA blood test, scans and a biopsy.

Stages, types and grades of prostate cancer

Doctors use Grade Groups and other information to divide prostate cancer into 5 groups called the the Cambridge Prognostic Group (CPG). The stage tells you the size of the cancer and whether it has spread.
