Treatment for thyroid cancer

Radiotherapy for thyroid cancer

Radiotherapy uses radiation to treat cancer cells. For thyroid cancer you might have internal radiotherapy using radioactive iodine. Or external radiotherapy which is given from outside the body.

Radioactive iodine treatment

Radioactive iodine uses a form of iodine called iodine 131 (I-131) that kills the cancer cells. It is a common treatment for papillary and follicular thyroid cancer. You take the treatment by mouth.

External radiotherapy for thyroid cancer

External radiotherapy uses high energy waves similar to x-rays to destroy cancer cells. A radiotherapy machine aims radiation beams at the cancer from outside the body.
