Thyroid cancer

Getting diagnosed with thyroid cancer

You usually start by seeing your GP if you have symptoms that could be due to thyroid cancer. They ask about your general health, examine you and may do tests or refer you to a specialist.

Seeing your GP when you have thyroid cancer symptoms

See your GP if you notice a change that isn't normal for you. Or if you have any of the possible signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer.

Referral to a specialist for symptoms of thyroid cancer

Your GP should arrange for you to see a specialist if you have symptoms that could be due to thyroid cancer.

Screening for thyroid cancer

There is no screening programme for thyroid cancer. But some people, who may be at a high risk of developing thyroid cancer, can have a screening test.

Tests for thyroid cancer

Your GP or specialist might arrange for you to have tests. You usually have an ultrasound scan and the doctor might take a sample of cells (biopsy).
