Surgery for liver cancer

Surgery to remove part of your liver (liver resection)

A liver resection might be an option if your cancer is only in your liver. A surgeon can remove a small area, or up to three quarters of the liver.

About resection surgery for liver cancer

A liver resection is surgery to remove part of your liver. It is sometimes called a hepatectomy or lobectomy.

Before resection surgery for liver cancer

Before surgery, you have tests to check your fitness and you meet members of your treatment team.

On the day of resection surgery for liver cancer

You might go into hospital the evening before or the morning of your operation.

After resection surgery for liver cancer

After a big operation, you may wake up in the intensive care unit or a high dependency unit. You usually move back to the ward within a day or so.

Problems after resection surgery for liver cancer

There is a risk of problems (complications) after any operation. Possible problems after a liver resection include bile leakage, liver failure or fluid build up in your tummy.
