Having a breathing stoma

A breathing stoma is a hole in your neck that you breathe through after surgery to your larynx. You might have a temporary stoma or a permanent stoma.

What is a breathing stoma?

A stoma is a hole (opening) made in the skin in front of your neck to allow you to breathe.

After your breathing stoma surgery

Waking up to find you are breathing through a hole in your neck can be quite a shock. But there are people that will support you during this time.

Looking after your stoma

Your breathing stoma is your new airway. You breathe and cough through it. It is very important that you know how to look after it.

Life with a breathing stoma

After having a breathing stoma, there will be several changes to your life. But there is a lot of support available.
