Oesophagogastrectomy

An operation to remove the stomach and part of the food pipe (oesophagus).

Oesophagus

Oesophagus is the medical name for the food pipe, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Oestrogen

One of the two female sex hormones.

Oestrogen receptor negative

Means that the cancer cells have few or no oestrogen receptors. This may affect the treatment given.

Oestrogen receptor positive

Means that the cancer cells have oestrogen receptors. Oestrogen can attach to the receptors to stimulate the cell to divide and grow.

Oestrogen receptors

Proteins of a cancer cell that are triggered by oestrogen to stimulate the cell to divide and grow. Some hormone therapies block oestrogen receptors so that oestrogen cannot trigger growth of the cancer cells.
