Research happening near you now:
We’re finding ways to prevent bowel cancer
Preventing cancer will have the greatest impact when it comes to saving lives and reducing the burden on our health services. That’s why we’re finding ways to prevent cancers from developing in the first place.
In Leicester, Professor Karen Brown is leading the COLO-PREVENT trial to improve survival for bowel cancer. She’s investigating whether two commonly used drugs – the diabetes drug metformin and the painkiller aspirin – could prevent people with a high risk of bowel cancer from developing the disease.
We’re finding ways to reduce cancer inequalities
Advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment haven’t benefited everyone equally. People of some races and ethnic groups experience faster-growing cancers and delays in diagnosis and treatment.
In Nottingham, Professor Nigel Mongan is part of team SAMBAI – a global team of researchers funded Cancer Grand Challenges, an initiative jointly funded by us and the National Cancer Institute in the US. This initiative unites researchers from around the world to take on some of the toughest challenges in cancer research.
Team SAMBAI aims to improve our understanding of the factors that influence cancer disparities in populations of African descent in the UK and US. Focusing on breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer, the team will gather huge amounts of data from the people taking part, including social, environmental and genetic data.
