About the role

Our event volunteers are helping us beat cancer

Across the UK, Shine supporters are getting ready to walk a half marathon or 10K through the night to raise vital funds for research into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. But they can’t cross the finish line without the passion and energy of an amazing team of event volunteers.

Be part of something special and sign up as a Shine Night Walk event volunteer. You can join as a group or go solo and meet like-minded people on the day.

What you’ll be doing

We have lots of volunteering roles on offer at our events. If you’d like a particular role, please select this on the form when signing up. If there's not a specific option on the form, sign up as General Volunteer and tell us in the ‘Comments’ section.

General event volunteers

You’ll get stuck in wherever you’re needed, from setting up and packing down the event to cheering on participants and answering queries.

Course route marshal volunteers

You’ll be located at a strategic point along the course, ready to cheer and motivate the walkers as they make their way across the city. You’ll be supported by a Zone Manager and be paired up with another volunteer. You can also bring a friend to buddy up with!

Cycle team volunteers

You’ll be guiding, supporting and motivating participants by cycling parts of the route.

Pit stop volunteers

You’ll be part of the team at one of our pit-stops, helping to motivate the walkers and handing out refreshments.

Venue volunteers

You’ll be part of a team assisting in tasks at Start/Finish venues, such as set-up or handing out medals and water.

Micro volunteers

As a Micro volunteer, you can help at an event, even for just 3 hours. A range of roles are available to micro volunteers, so let us know what you’re interested in, and we’ll find an activity that suits you. You can help us beat cancer, whatever time you can give.

The skills you’ll need

You don’t need any experience, you just need to be motivated, enthusiastic and enjoy being part of a team. We’re looking for people who are:

  • Friendly and keen to make sure everyone has a brilliant day

  • Flexible and willing to get stuck in

  • Supportive team players

What to expect on the day

We want you to have a great experience volunteering at our events. You’ll get a full briefing on arrival, meals and snacks as appropriate, and support throughout the day. We can also cover local travel and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, as agreed with your Event Manager in advance.

Reasonable adjustments

At Cancer Research UK we know that having a diverse volunteer community will help us to beat cancer. We will happily consider making any reasonable adjustments to support our volunteers with a disability or health condition.

Role requirements

Volunteers need to be aged 13 years old or above to volunteer at Shine Night Walk. Volunteers under the age of 18 will need permission from a parent or legal guardian who will need to register to volunteer, and will need to be accompanied by this responsible adult at the event. All volunteers must be living in the UK to volunteer at one of our events.

Course marshal volunteers and cycle volunteers must be over 18 years of age.

Cycle volunteers are required to bring their own bike suitable to the terrain of the course.
