Radiotherapy for early stage stomach cancer

Radiotherapy uses high energy waves similar to x-rays to destroy cancer cells.

Early stage cancer means your stomach cancer hasn't spread. External beam radiotherapy directs radiotherapy beams at the cancer from a machine.

Radiotherapy isn't a common treatment for early stage stomach cancers. But you might have it combined with chemotherapy (chemoradiotherapy) after surgery.

Planning radiotherapy

The radiotherapy team plans your external beam radiotherapy before you start treatment. This means working out how much radiation you need to treat the cancer and exactly where you need it.

Having radiotherapy for stomach cancer

You have radiotherapy in a hospital radiotherapy department. You usually have it together with chemotherapy (chemoradiotherapy).

Side effects of radiotherapy

Side effects tend to start a week after the radiotherapy begins. They can include feeling tired, feeling sick and diarrhoea.
