Other treatments

The main treatments for oesophageal (food pipe) cancer are surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. You might also need treatment for difficulty swallowing. This can be a symptom of oesophageal cancer or a side effect of surgery and radiotherapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment for very early cancer and advanced cancer.

Oesophageal stent

An oesophageal stent is a small metal or plastic tube put into the oesophagus to keep it open.

Oesophageal dilatation

The food pipe can be blocked by cancer, or become narrower after treatment. Oesophageal dilatation means stretching the food pipe to open it up again.

Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) destroys cancer cells by using a combination of a light sensitising drug and a very bright light.
