UK totals of cancer incidence

More than 324,500 people were diagnosed with cancer in the UK in 2010 (Table 1.1).1-4 The crude rate shows that this equates to around 521 cases for every 100,000 people. The European age-standardised rate for the UK (which provides unbiased comparisons between different populations with respect to age) is significantly higher in males than in females (426 per 100,000 vs. 374 per 100,000, respectively).

Trends in cancer incidence in Great Britain

The European age-standardised incidence rates for all cancers in Great Britain increased by 22% in males during the period 1975-1977 to 2008-2010 (from 351.8 per 100,000 to 429.8 per 100,000) and by 42% in females (from 263.3 per 100,000 to 375.1 per 100,000), with almost this entire rise occurring before the late 1990s (Figure 1.1).1-3 Over the last ten years in Great Britain (between 1999-2001 and 2008-2010), the incidence rates increased by just 2% in males and 6% in females.
