Working together since 2002
Tesco along with their colleagues and customers have raised over £70m for Cancer Research UK
Our partnership with Tesco, British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK has been named the ‘Most Admired Partnership’ two years in a row in the C&E Corporate-Non-Profit Partnerships Barometer.
Since 2002, Tesco has contributed over £70 million to Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. In 2018 we teamed up with Tesco, British Heart Foundation, and Diabetes UK to launch a pioneering partnership aimed at improving the health of the nation.
Diabetes, cancer and heart and circulatory disease account for more than half of all deaths in the UK. We all know someone who has been diagnosed, lives with, or has sadly lost their life to one of these conditions, yet roughly half of type 2 diabetes, four in ten cases of cancer and many heart and circulatory diseases can be prevented or delayed. Our partnership brings together the skills and expertise of Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK with one of the UK’s largest supermarket retailer to help tackle the biggest health challenges facing the nation.
Over the last five years this has looked liked:
Supporting the development of a sector leading workplace health programme for Tesco’s 300,000 UK colleagues
Researching and delivering campaigns to give customers the information they need to make healthier choices through in-store and online communication and nudges
Creating a training programme for Tesco pharmacists to help them better support customers in the prevention of heart and circulatory disease, cancer and diabetes
Fundraising for more health research through innovative and engaging fundraising initiatives
Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK have been working with Tesco to deliver specialist training to Tesco pharmacists and pharmacy colleagues to support their conversations with the public.
Shoppers can now pop in and talk to one of the team wearing a ‘Let’s Talk’ badge. They are available for private and confidential conversations in consultation rooms. The training will help Tesco pharmacy colleagues provide more information and support as to how people can help lower their risk of these serious conditions through small changes to their day-to-day routine.
Pharmacists and pharmacy colleagues in more than 330 of Tesco’s pharmacies have completed the training. We hope the convenient setting and ease of accessibility will encourage more shoppers to have conversations about their health and seek support for making positive changes or about any concerning signs or symptoms.
Tesco makes it simple for their customer and colleagues to donate, and those pennies add up to make a big difference in beating cancer!
Tesco customers can donate their Clubcard vouchers to CRUK. Every £0.50 in vouchers can be transformed into a £0.50 charitable spend. Simply pick the number of Clubcard vouchers you wish to donate & select CRUK via the Tesco website and you’ll receive an email within 30 minutes informing you that your donation to life-saving cancer research has been successful.
Twice a year customers using the self-service till can round up their shopping to the nearest £1 and donate the difference to the Tesco Health Charity Partnership.
Following our partnership renewal in March 2024, all the money raised from these appeals is now restricted to vital information and support initiatives run by each charity. Every little donation has been vital to help our charities provide information and support when people need it the most.
This has supported Cancer Research UK’s informative leaflets, our Nurse Helpline, as well as the Cancer Chat forum. Our Cancer Chat is a fully moderated discussion forum where anyone can talk to other people affected by cancer, share their experiences and get support. The forum is extremely active, receiving upwards of 6,500 posts and welcoming more than 1,500 new members every month.
Tesco were the headline sponsor of Race for Life, our biggest series of fundraising events, from 2001 to 2022. More than 400,000 Tesco colleagues and customers have taken part in an event in that time. Tesco continue to pay for staff places so colleagues can sign up for free, and they also top up their fundraising by 20%!
Tesco’s longstanding support has helped us make huge strides towards bringing about a world where people live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.
We are excited about the difference we can continue to make with them by our side. Together we will beat cancer.
