Sun & UV - A to Z

SunsmartThis page links to content about the sun, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and cancer.

Most skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation from the sun or sunbeds. Recent decades have seen huge increases in the numbers of people in the UK being diagnosed with skin cancer, largely due to overexposure to UV radiation.

Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D, which is required to build and maintain strong bones. But most people in the UK only need to spend a short amount of time in the sun to make vitamin D. This is always less than the amount that causes reddening or burning.
