Work problems

Hello, I would like some advice. I had a mastectomy and diep last September. I had a reduction on the other one in April this year. Since I returned to work I have found out I have to have more surgery. I told my employer and since then they want to swap my job from mornings to afternoon. I told them I physically can't because of fatigue. I gave my employer a letter from the fatigue clinic and my doctor saying I have fatigue and I need rest in the afternoon (I'm a cleaner). They have now said they want to reduce my hours and transfer me to a cleaning company which I worked for before and I don't want to go back on their books. I'm in the UNITE union and was wondering whether it is worth getting them involved.

  • HI Goofy2014,

I'm sorry to read of the situation your employers are putting you in as a result of your cancer treatment.

From what you've said I think it may be worth speaking to your union about this. We have some information on our website about the discrimination act and cancer as well as financial support you may be entitled to receive.

Macmillan have financial advisors you can chat to so it may be worth giving them a call to see if they can help with this as well.

I hope you're able to get this sorted out soon and I wish you all the best with the next part of your cancer journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
