what causes cancer

I have lost my grandad meads to throat cancer in 1979,my grandma to pancreatic cancer   in 1995,my father to pancreatic cancer in 2010

My mum to liver cancer last November 8 ,and my dog nipper in 2015

Please can someone advise me what causes cancer,is it the food we are consuming, petrol fumes what? My mum never drunk or smoked  ,my dad only had the odd tipple of Glenfiddich or boddingtons bitter, because being diabetic type 1_ had to be careful what he ate and how  much he drank

He smoked a pipe and cigar,so how did he die of cancer, cigarettes cause cancer not gentle pipe tobacco or cigars,as for my grandad meads he did not smoke for 40 years how come he passed away,my grandma was diabetic surely that would not cause it,and my nipper never had an illness in her life until cancer struck her down

  • Oh Crikey, where to start?

There are over 200 types of cancer -  each probably has a complicated set of different triggers.

That said, only about 40% of cancers are preventable .. which means that 60% of them are caused by our genes and whatever we do they can't be avoided. I don't know much about canine cancer, but that's probably just as complicated as human cancer.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi sorry from what i read most of cancers are caused by lifstyle external factors polution smoking drinking etc but a small amount is genetic .excess free radicals .going round stealing electrons from cells then they are damaged and reproduce themselves damaged so on and so on. Thats how i read it .but ime not a dr or scientist .

  • Hi there ...

If I could or anyone could say for deffinate, there would be no cancer ...

Cancer doesn't care who it gets ... young , old, fit, poorly... some babies can be born with it ... they haven't eaten or done anything yet ... you have been really effected by it ... cancer has no compation ..

It does make you wonder just how much processed food now, and what they do to it ... years ago, everything was fresh .. but saying that we had asbestos mats in science.. pubs full of cigarette smoke, where your cloths would stink of it ... .  etc ... mobile phones ... and sorry but even cigars and pipe smoking did add to the chances ... but then people who have never smoked get lung cancer ...

My family has had lots of different things .. a niece with cystic fibrosis,  uncle with parkingsons ... a cousin with childhood lukimia... the list is endless ... my dad cancer, another cousin died of lung cancer last year ... bro in law .. cancer ... and yes my dog too, throut cancer .. me and my untie breast cancer ..

It's really sad, but I do have a big family ...and there's lots more ... it just happens ... and my sister in late dementure ... life can be hard and crule ... but l just live to the best I can every day .. that's all we can do ..

So if there was no cancer, I'm sure something else would come along .. it's no good trying to make sense of it, there is none ... all you can do is live in the day .. keep those passed in your heart ... and try and cut the odds by eating as healthy as poss ... not smoking ... but it just decreases the odds ..

Sorry it's not very helpfull ... Chrissie x

  • Hi Paulus,

Sadly research shows that only 40% is preventable - 60% is down to genetics or plain bad luck!

Shocking I know but it puts everyone's angst into context!
