Thyroid Cancer

Was up a and e on Thursday with unbearable pain and feeling pretty weak and felt like I was going to pass out.  My CRP marker was high and another marker showed I have an infection.  Was put straight away on an iv antibiotic for the day and iv pain killers with also oral morphine.  Got the diagnosis of half my thyroid is severely infected and the other half with the nodules they are pretty certain that it is follicular thyroid cancer.  Surgeon/cancer specialist on Tuesday to discuss the next steps.  I’m really worried and panicky and not sure what to expect but at least I have more answers.  Now have oral antibiotics and strong painkillers to help get the infection and pain under control.

  • Thank you so much for your well wishes.  I will certainly let you know.  I'm so worried about everything and worried that things are not going to be quick enough,  with everything that is going on.  I think at the moment the first thing will be to get the infection under control as it has had 4 weeks to get a grip and I have never felt so poorly.  I'm just hoping for guidence on the next steps x

  • I just wanted to update you further following my appointment with the Oncologist this morning.

He is absolutely lovely and seriously annoyed with the Hospital for not admitting me on Thursday when I went to see them about the severe pain in my neck.  I have a serious infection on the right part of my thyroid which he says is quite unusual as it is not the sort of organ to get infected.  He has now prescribed me with 3 different antibiotics to take together for the next 7 days and has also given me more painkillers which are a little stronger.  At the moment he is more worried about the infection that anything else.

The left side however with the suspicious lump,  to be honest he will not know what this is until it comes out and properly tested.  He has said that again he is annoyed with the hospital for telling me on Thursday that it was 100 percent Cancer.  He is giving it a percentage of 40 percent that it could be cancer but it does need to come out.   At the present time I am booked in for Surgery on the 27th October 2021 possibly the 20th if his colleague has space but at the moment it’s the 27th.  It’s an urgent case as normally people have to wait months in the current climate.

I have to have a CT scan in the next few weeks to check to see if the potential cancer has spread to any other part of my body and also I will have to go for another Ultrasound to check on the thyroid at some point.

  • Hello Sammy1978

Thanks for letting us know how you got on today. It sounds as if the Consultant was able to give you some reassurance about things and I have my fingers crossed for you now that the new meds are able to get this infection under control ahead of your surgery.

Hopefully, within the next month, things will be much improved for you and you'll have a clearer picture of where you stand with things.

Keep in touch and let us know how things go.

    Best wishes,
