Throat cancer

I am 6 weeks post radiotherapy for throat cancer. I don't know where to turn taking the ensures but I'm always sick, cannot take anything orally yet. The pain in my mouth and throat and the ulcers are quite unbearable and after I've been sick it's just burning. I wonder when there's gonna be a respite. I've stayed very positive especially for my family. I'm a 64 year old woman never suffered with depression but sometimes I'm not sure I can go on with this. Thankyou for listening

kindest regards Debbie

  • Hello Debbie,

Poor you this sounds really painful and what you are going through seems indeed to be linked to your radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer as mentioned on our side effects of radiotherapy page. However as it's been longer than 6 weeks and you are still feeling sick and experiencing so much pain, I would get in touch with your medical team or specialist or mention it to your GP in the first instance. I am sure they will be able to help you get some pain relief or to treat those dreadful ulcers. You are definitely really brave living like this for the past few weeks but I think it's definitely worth getting some medical help now and discussing this with a medical expert.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you'd like to talk to them about this.

I hope that you will meet others on the forum who have been in a similar situation before and that they will come and share their experience with you.

Hopefully you feel better soon and this will heal completely so you can have some respite from all this pain.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Lucie,

Thankyou so much for responding to my post   It's nice to know that someone cares, sorry if that sounds like self pity but my stiff upper lip is waning. That's very good advice I will certainly do that now I know it's ok to do that. Once again Thankyou lucie

    kindest regards

    Debbie

  • You're most welcome Debbie and it definitely isn't self pity! You have been so brave. I really felt for you as that is a lot to have to put up with so definitely forget the stiff upper lip as you say (that made me smile) and get in touch with the doctors. Even over the weekend, you won't be bothering them at all and you can ring 111 if you feel you'd like to talk to someone now.

I hope it gets sorted for you quickly as it sounds so painful.

  • Hi recently I've been very worried about throat cancer or tonsil cancer. If you don't mind me asking what were your symptoms. I've recently had 3 ENT appointments meaning camera up my nose and rown my throat 3 times and they said they can't find anything. I still have symptoms though but could be reflux. I'm so anxious recently. I've also had two ultrasounds on my neck which were completely fine. Head mri and ct head. Chest X-ray, full spine mri. Would they have detected something like cancer by now. Sorry for the rant.

  • Hi Debbie I am Hazel I am 3 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes. I gave a blog www. Radioactiveraz.wordpress.com it may help you. 6 weeks us early days . I was on ensure for at least 3 month 6 a day to  give me calories and that Left me  free to try eating. Poached  eggs are good toast  far far easier than bread well buttered. Small trifle custards etc. It's brutal treaty and recovery can take a giid while. If you can get into the mantr foid is fuel it will help. It's takes a while fir appetite to return.
hope this  helps Hazel. There's tips snd links on my blogs.

  • Hello Kim

That's not a rant if your worried then that's real. In my case my right tonsil was very enlarged but there was no pain so I left it fir 6 months, it wasn't until it interfered with swallowing that I went to the doctor he sent me to ENT and the consultant did the camera thing he also put he's whole hand in my mouth to feel my tonsil (urg!). He diagnosed it straight away as tonsil cancer then it was non stop. The doctors and nurses well the whole team really do know what there doing so it should put your mind at rest Kim if they've said it's not tonsil cancer. Sounds like they need to keep digging to get to the bottom of it. Good luck Kim hope you get some answers   Take care

    kind regards Debbie

  • Hello Hazel

Thankyou so much for replying that's very good advice and helpful, I will keep the ensures up. I didn't realise that it could take that long. I've just recently got a new batch of ulcers which is making brushing my teeth painful. I will knuckle down, can I just ask when did your ulcers go or when did the pain get easier?Thankyou Hazel I really am grateful also im a bit backward when it comes to tec but I'd love to read your blog I would appreciate knowing what other people have gone through, but im unsure how to go about finding it. Once again thanks Hazel

    kind regards Debbie

  • Hi Debbie. The ulcers come snd go even now I still get the odd ones. Our mucosal lining of mouth tongue and throat tske such a battering body wise. As for pain by weeek 13,of recovery I was off all medications. But even now at 3 years I can still get tongue ache for wsnt if a better word. The ulcers fir me certain food triggger them now eg tomatoes and uncooked cheese can cause a flare up. I still have gelclair for those bad ulcers mostly they go within a day or so now.
my blogs is www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com  if you type that in on the internet I should pop up.or click the link  It starts with the most recent entry so you will have to scroll to start.
    hope thus helps. Hazel

  • Hi Kim highly unlikely you've throat cancer if you've had 3 scopes plus m r I s. The ent consultants know whst they are looking at. My only symptom was a lump in the hollow area if my collar bone. I had no issues swallowing  drinking eating no sore throat So maybe acid reflux needs investigation

hope this helps Hazel look at my blog for more info on my experience www.radioactiveraz.Wordpress.com

  • Hi thank you for your reply, I went again to the ENT. Another camera down my throat said all looked normal. He said I have very small tonsils. He felt around my neck and said he couldn't feel any lymph nodes. Should I take this and just move on now? He thinks the pains in my ears and neck are from muscle tension.

Surely after all theses tests: blood test x10 ultrasounds on the neck x2 mri of the head and full spine mri. Also seen the dentist a lot too. Do you think they would have found something by now?
