Lump on neck

Hi everyone,

Roughly two weeks ago I discovered a lump around the size of a golf ball (an irregular shape) on my gland, on the side of my neck (just above my collarbone). I went to the doctors and she said it was most likely a swollen gland, to give it two weeks and only go back if it’s hasnt reduced in size (sounded like something that happens often and isn’t anything to worry about). Two weeks later and it hasn’t reduced in size and it’s quite tender so I went back and it’s an urgent referral to hospital. It’s just shocked me a bit as I got the impression at first it wasn’t anything to worry about. Does anyone know what I should be expecting at hospital visit? Or what it could possibly be?

  • Hi,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, and I'm sorry to read this - I can understand this must be confusing and unsettling. Unfortunately I'm unable to advise on the specifics, but you may like to check out this webpage on what an urgent referral means and what to expect: www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../what-is-an-urgent-referral

I hope this helps. If you have any other concerns or questions, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5) and always happy to help.

    Wishing you all the best.

i’m same as u went for my results wednesday and now been referred for a core biopsy. Worried sick as they have said possible lymphoma. I’ve done what done what you shouldnt probably do and googled it. I go back for results of core biopsy in 2weeks then will no 100%. But the waiting is a killer xxx

  • had core biopsy friday. Doc said lump was hard which is why it hurt so much. Go back 10th april for results to find out for sure. I feel fine other than the lump on neck xxx

  • Hello there,

My wife had a similar lump on the right side of the neck. Can some one update on what is the process after from the referral. Also can you please share the wait time for each stage. Do we need to worry if the lump is firm? What are the causes for the same. Appreciate if some one can clarify.

    Many thanks.

  • I can’t believe I’m only now seeing everyone’s replies (I’m not very good at working these chats). Thank you everyone who took the time out to write something. It is unfortunately something called Hodgkin’s lymphoma, doctors were originally confident at the start that they’d caught it early on, only to later find it was stage 3 advanced (in my spleen amongst other areas). I was given a diagnosis end of March and am now coming to the end of my second cycle of chemo (chemo is modified BEACOPP and each cycle is 3 weeks). I found waiting for a diagnosis to be the worst part of my experience so far. I have a bad needle phobia so was really struggling with anxiety. Now we have a diagnosis and treatment plans I find hospital visits far less stressful and am getting on really well. If anyone has any questions I’ll be more than happy to answer. I’ll keep trying to check this page

  • Thank you for the reply. I was travelling abroad 48 hours after my appointment so they got me in for an emergency biopsy. I still went away and was called back to get my results which was unfortunately Hodgkin’s lymphoma (more detailed reply below). How did you get on? Wishing you all the best

  • Sorry I’ll write a better reply to you. My referral was very rushed because I had a week before going abroad for a month. They managed to get me in (48 hours before I was set to travel). I went to that appointment which they then got me in for an emergency biopsy and ultrasound of the next day. All very rushed. I still went away the day after and received a call a week on to say I needed to get back into the country. I came home the same day they called and they got me an appointment for the next day. Confirmed Hodgkin’s. Took another 2/3 weeks to get my PET scan done which showed it as being stage 3 advanced. I’m nearly 6 weeks into treatment and all is looking very positive. I have another PET scan next Monday to see what’s going on. Hope everything goes well for your wife.

  • Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I finish treatment in 2 weeks x
