  • Hello bethahite727,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your MRI. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting to find out more.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

is it normal to have liver growths and it not be cancer I've being having right side lower back pain a while. I spoke to doctors Friday where he said there not overly concerned and tried to reassure me he said the urgent mri is due to my age etc and he said there pretty sure from the ultrasound it could be cyst, is it normal if it is just cysts to cause back pain? I have no other symptoms other than this

  • Hello bethahite727,

Unfortunately I am not myself medically qualified to advise you on this but I would trust what the doctor said to you - they are the experts in the field and know how to interpret ultrasounds. The back pain might be completely unrelated and it is worth mentioning to your doctor that you are experiencing back pain. You could if you are still worried also ask for a second opinion. You can find out more about this on this page.

I hope you get the reassurance you need on this soon and that the back pain goes away.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

This is what I originally went to doctors for and was sent for scan as they suspected kidney issues as the pain is in lower right back under rib cage going to groin.. I wasn't overly worried but not after finding out I had growths on my kidneys I wondered if this was the reason for the pain on right side due to liver growths doctor told me due to age etc would be very unlikely to be cancer my bloods for liver was fine but said because of my age this is the reason for urgent mri I'm so scared it's cancer and this is why I'm getting back pain x

  • Hi there, I'm by no means a doctor, but from what I've gathered over doing research for my own reasons. I've learned that a primary liver cancer for someone your age is incredibly rare, going from the cancer research website. Less than 10 primary liver cancers for people in your age bracket are diagnosed in the whole uk every year. So that would put the odds at 6800000/1 in your favour

    See for yourself.

  • Thank you that as made me feel better. I have a feeling it could be cyst just scared me when they said urgent mri and six growths biggest being 4cm especially with the lower right back pain that I've being having

  • Hello Bethahite, I thought I'd reply to your question in my previous discussion in this thread to keep things in the one spot for you. This is obviously a very worrying time for you. The chances that you would have Liver cancer are very very small, even with the urgent referrals. Unfortunatly my wife was in the very very small group, her liver cancer was a primary Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Her only symptom was pain in the lower right quadrant, more so on the front abdominal area rather than the back. Initially, the thought was that she had appendicitis. What I can tell you is that she ended up in emergency because the progression from when she first felt pain to when it was unbearable was very quick, as in a matter of days. After her scan in the hospital which showed a growth on her liver (one primary growth surrounded by smaller satelite nodules) we quickly saw a specialist who was very certain in the diagnosis, so much so that he offered us a biopsy to be certain but talked us out of it and that we should just do the surgery to remove the lump as quickly as possible. There was never any discussion that it could just be cysts, from our experience it was a very certain thing rather than a 'maybe'. I know from experience that being young with liver growths is an unusual and therefore lonely place. Please feel free to ask me any other questions that may help you.

  • Hello, I hope your wife is doing okay now? So I originally went for a ultra sound which and found these growths where I am not being referred to a specialist which is tomorrow. I am so worried there is 6 different growths largest being 4cm. I spoke to the doctor after ultrasound they didn't seem too concerned but still sent me on urgent refferal the only symptoms I have is lower right back pain sometimes a stabbing pain in my side but not very often. Xx

  • That's great that you're appointment is tomorrow and hopefully you will know more then and get some closure from the wondering. My wife is currently doing well. Unfortunately her cancer spread to her lung and she has now had 3 surgeries in the last 8 years on liver and lungs but she is still going strong. When first diagnosed we had 2 kids under 3, who are now 9 and (nearly) 11. Best of luck with the appointment, will be thinking of you!

  • So glad your wife is still going strong she seems a fighter!  I'm really hoping I'll get more info tomorrow I was told I would be sent for a urgent mri but there is no mention of this on my letter other than seeing specialist
