Eye cancer

I have been referred to a specialist eye hospital for suspected choroidal melanoma . I have read up about this and it says this is an aggressive cancer can anyone advise please

  • Hello Gazetta and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate that this must be a worry for you.

Please remember that not everyone referred to a specialist centre with a suspected cancer will have one. The specialist team you will see may need to do further tests before knowing what is the matter. You can read more about the tests that are used to diagnose eye cancer on our website here

If you are diagnosed with choroidal melanoma you can get more information about it here and how it is treated here

From what I have seen regarding the outlook of this type of cancer if it is caught at an early stage then it has a good chance to be successfully treated. However, like all cancers if it has spread to another organ , (if it does then this is often the liver), then it can be more difficult to treat successfully.

Choroidal melanoma is a subtype of uveal melanoma. One of the specialist centres that treat this type of eye cancer produces a patient information leaflet about it that you may find useful to read

I hope this has been of some help to you. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
