Exemestane - osteoarthritis worse?

After surgery and radiotherapy in 2012-13, I tried various drugs in 2013, anastrazole, tamoxifen and lastly, exemestrane but finally decided, with agreement of my oncologist and surgeon, to come off all of them as I had side-effects with everything. I pursued each for a few months but exemestane was the worst - making me feel dreadful and giving me joint pains and an epulis (swelling on gum) and exascerbating existing gum disease so much that I had to have numerous dental implants. I have had one total knee replacement (2016) but still have bad knee pain in both knees. I came on this site to see if the anti-oestrogen drugs, in particular exemestane, could be responsible for my current symptoms. It has been interesting to read other posts. Just had my regular 18 month mammogram and, hopefully, all seems fine.

  • Hello GirlWednesday.

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with side effects from your treatment.

We've some information on our website about exemestane and one of the common side effects listed is painful joints and/or muscles. I can see from the forum that you're not alone in struggling with painful joints. [@gezza]‍ recently posted on this thread where a number of other members have commented over the years about simmilar issues.

It's impossible for us to say if your treatment has caused your current symptoms but it's worth discussing further with your GP and possibly asking for a referral regarding your knee pain.

    Best wishes,
