Exemestane side effects

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has been on Exemestane after Tamoxifen. I've been taking Tamoxifen for more than two years, and experienced a few side effects. To begin with I had severe headaches but these wore off after I'd taken the drug for a while. I had hot flushes throughout the two years, and a few other minor problems.

I've now been switched to Exemestane which I've been taking for a month and a half, and I am again getting bad headaches. The most severe side effect that has been worsening dramatically since I started taking the drug is arthritic pain in all my joints, especially my fingers and wrists, but also elbows, shoulders, hips etc. I am also getting other side effects such as nausea, dizziness, indigestion, constipation and a few more. I feel hot and feverish all the time rather than having hot flushes.

My oncologist suggests I take the tablets for another three or four weeks to see if things improve and if not, go back on Tamoxifen.

I am just wondering what other people have experienced? Are the side effects likely to wear off if I continue on Exemestane? If I stop taking it, will my joints go back to normal or will they be permanently affected?

Obviously I don't want the cancer to return, but neither do I want to continue with a treatment that is making me feel ill all the time if it's not absolutely necessary.

I'd love to hear other people's experiences. Thank you.

  • No one has replied to my earlier post, so I am trying again in the hope that there is someone who's been on Exemestane. I have continued with the treatment, but the headaches and swollen, painful joints have not abated and I have more or less decided to go back on Tamoxifen. I would still appreciate hearing of other people's experiences. Thanks.

  • Hi Grannyatti,

I too am disappointed that no one has replied to your thread, in my opinion this happens all too often but is the way of things today.

I cannot help you with this query other than to say I took Tamoxifen for five years after mastectomy with little or no side effects, I did put on weight but cannot say that it was solely the effects of Tamoxifen.

I sincerely hope that someone comes up with some answers for you. Take care and I wish you well. Rodis.

COME ON MEMBERS THERE MUST BE SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE OF THIS DRUG.

  • hi

I have only just arrived on this post, like you i have been on tamox for 31 months and have now been switched to exemastane i have just completed 4 weeks, i have been put of work for 2 tweeks and another 2 now, the head aches and feeling really grotty was horrible but i am determined to give it my best shot, i do feel i am now starting to come round abit. I did some silly things like driving up a wrong way street , my work has not been very sympathetic which has added to my vulnerability, can you tell me if you are any better now, the aches and pains and flushes i know we have to live with but it has got me down. i do hope all yours have now settled.

  • I very much hope things have improved for you, Grannyatti.

I have just come across this thread as my mum started on exemestane a week ago and has just started to feel sick and is constipated. I don't know if this is due to exemestane as other things may be going on but I thought I would reply to you in case it is of any help.

    All good wishes to you.

  • I came off Tamoxifen and went on to Exemestane (Aromasin), in feb, Gradually since then I have got severe joint and bone pain.

My wrists, elbow, fingers, ankles, knees, hips and soles of my feet have gradually got worse, I have an appt with oncologistin June,

so will ask about this then. I have found untold sites and most people have the same problems.

I dont know if this is of any help.

Just type in Aromasin and pain. I dont want to stop taking this unless Dr says I can, I should take this until Sept 2012,

but dont think I can handle the constant pain.

I am 43 and have a strong family history. Feel like 93 most days.

    Thank you Donna

  • hi there, i started two years ago on arimidex and struggled to get out of bed all my joints and muscles were affected, put weight on and could hardly walk never known such pain and i have a strong pain threshold, i stuck them for a year on my oncologists advice then he changed me over to exemerstane last xmas and yes all the aches and pains still there but not quite as bad my lymphedema nurse told me to get glucossamine 1500 strength and take them for at least three months as they have been proven to help some people i started on them about 5 weeks ago so hoping they will help eventually, my surgeon said 2 weeks ago when i see the oncologist again which will be next august to ask to go on tamoxifen ive just today received my mamogram results and they are fine after two years. regards sandyxx

  • I switched from Tamoxifen a year ago to Exemstane. I have had severe joint pain in my feet, knees, elbows but mostly hand and wrist which is now becoming unbearable. I have just been for my yearly check up and my surgeon has switched me Anastrozole. So it's now a waiting game to see if there is any difference. I know your post is old but hopefully it may help you.
