BRCA2 diagnosis

Hi,

I was very recently diagnosed as positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. Given my family history, I have always just assumed I had it so the news didn't come as a shock, I have also always had a plan in place should I be positive.

My grandmother, my father, my 2 great aunts, their daughters are all positive. My grandmother first had breast cancer when she was in her 40s and now it has come back again in her 70s. My great aunts have also both had breast cancer. My grandmother, one of my great aunts and her daughter have all had bilateral masectomies. My great aunt's daughter had it done as a risk reducing surgery. This is the route I would like to go down.

I am 25 years old and feel I would much rather have a major procedure like this done while I am young, fit and healthy as it would be easier to recover from. Obviously, I am slightly worried about the end outcome in term of cosmetics. I would be interested in breast reconstruction.

I am wondering has anyone here had a risk reducing masectomy and reconstruction, and if so what are your results like? What form of masectomy did you go for? Also I have read online about reconstruction with implants? I am from the UK and the articles appear to be from the US. I was wondering if that is an option here?

Thanks for any responses in advance:)

  • Hello han333,

I just wanted to welcome you to Cancer Chat and I am sorry to hear you have been diagnosed as positive to the BRCA2 gene mutation. It sounds like this wasn't really a surprise to you given your family history and it's good that you now know for sure and can take steps to reduce the risk.

There is detailed information on our website on the mastectomy which you can read here. In-depth information about breast reconstruction can be found on this page.  I hope it will be useful to you and that it will help you make those difficult decisions. More specifically, you can read more about breast reconstruction with implants here. It mentions that "surgeons in the UK follow strict safety standards when using implants" so I would have assumed that this is currently an option in the UK too. Do check with your doctor though that this is something that can be offered where you live in the UK.

I thought I would also signpost you to this thread by [@MayB]‍ - though her circumstances were a bit different from yours, she might be a good person for you to talk to about the mastectomy and reconstruction options.

Our nurses are also only a free phone call away so feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you would like to discuss your options with them.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do - it can't be an easy decision for you at such a young age. Keep us updated if you get a moment - your experience I am sure will be invaluable to other ladies who find themselves facing a similar dilemma.

    Best wishes,
