Brachytherapy

I have had a hysterectomy on the 1st of Feb due to womb cancer and now I have to have brachytherapy.
I have been on the sick from the 31/12/21 due to issues before my hysterectomy. I am 5 week after operation. I was wondering do I go back to work before my treatment or wait till I have had it and see how it goes .
I have been with the company 8 years and this is the first time I have been off work due to sickness

  • Hello Louandjon and thanks for posting us a question,

I am sorry to learn about your cancer and hope you are doing ok after your surgery.

I am not sure how many treatments will be planned for you or over what time period as brachytherapy treatment schedules can vary.  So I think if you haven't already been told what to expect, it might be worth finding out to help you to decide about work.

Brachytherapy can cause side effects which could be an issue depending on your job. I can see an argument for staying off a bit longer until all of your treatment is behind you and then having a phased return to work, but I think you probably need to talk this over with your oncologist and get their input before making a decision.

If you haven't seen it, there is some information about brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy) on our website here  and in case it is useful, another charity Macmillan Cancer Support, has a section about cancer and work.

Do give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5 weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
