  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Sybs.

I’m sorry to hear your husband was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, this must be a very difficult time for you both.

The feelings you describe are absolutely normal and many people here on the forum can relate to what you are going through at the moment so I hope they will soon pop by to offer their support.

I had a look around the forum and found that [@kierant1]‍  posted a while ago about having survived acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../hi-102 and mentioned he was willing to chat about his experience.

On the same thread [@sphytylr]‍ posted about their partner who was also diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, so feel free to reply to their posts.

Stay strong Sybs and remember we're here whenever you need a chat.

    Warm wishes,

  • Hi,

My nanna was diagnosed with ALL back in September last year.

My nanna had a chemo treatment once a week along with numerous blood and platelet transfusions for 4 weeks and she had to stay in hospital the whole time due to the type of cancer and easily catching an infection.

I know the pain you are feeling, after reality sunk in I was a crying mess. I just couldn't believe it, I felt like it was all a horrible nightmare that I would wake up from.

You must stay hopeful, the nurses will do their absolute best to help your husband and give him the treatment that he needs. Ensure he says strong and positively focused and eats and drinks plenty to keep up his strength from the chemo.

I wish you and your husband all the best, I will be thinking of you.

    X

  • Thanks Laura thank you for replying I am sorry your Nanna has had to deal with this how is she now? Mark starting his chemo so fingers crossed for him x
  • My nanna had a lot of trouble actually getting diagnosed.
She had numerous trips to A&E and the doctors with pain and weakness and was dismissed each time for 'pulled muscles' and 'bad nutrition' (she suffered with an eating disorder). Being told this by a medical professional, we all stupidly believed them instead of nanna.
It wasn't until she started to turn yellow that the doctor decided to book her a hospital appointment to see a specialist and take a bone marrow sample.

She silently suffered for over a year like this, getting weaker and weaker and by the time she was admitted to hospital and treated she just wasn't strong enough.

I'm always left questioning 'What if she was diagnosed earlier?' 'Why didn't I believe how bad she really was?' It's something that eats me up and breaks my heart each time.

I'm sure your husband is a very strong man and will conquer this head on. I hope his first chemo was okay? x

  • Hi Laura I am very sorry about your Nanna what age was she - I too feel guilty we dismissed some symptoms my hubby was having saying he had "man" flu and being a bit woosy saying he was tired etc but I think we did get the bone marrow and diagnoses in ok time, at least I hope so! We are still at the very beginning of all the hideous treatment so fingers crossed You mustn't feel guilty about your Nanna I'm sure she knows you did your best Take care x
  • She was 69.

One of the most evil things about this disease is the symptoms, because they can so easily be missed. The last thing we thought was wrong was cancer! That wasn't even an option!

I'm really glad that you have caught it earlier for your husband.
The chemo did work for nanna, she had the 4 week round and by week 5 her blood count was back up and her white blood cells were really improving!

It may be a tough few weeks, but I'm sure you can be strong and get through it with your husband.

I'll be here if you ever need to chat! x

  • Hi Sybs,

Sorry I didnt see my tag on this back in May, I hope things have got better since then. My partner was diagnosed last October in a situation that sounds similar to your husband's. Mine went to the doctor on a Thursday and was diagnosed Saturday morning. 3 weeks prior we had just found out we were expecting too, what timing!

My partner is currently on day 90 following his BMT after a positive MRD following phase 1/2 and so far he's still fighting strong. Let me know if you need any advice.
