Worried over neck lump

Hello hoping to get some support .

Found a lump in my neck on right hand side close to my ear but directly underneath a tooth I'd just had a root canal done a few months ago .

Found it on Dec 13 , went to a doctor 2 days later who said it's just a swollen lymph node. But if it was still there to go back in 3 weeks .

3 weeks later go back see a different doctor who also says it's just a lymph node and not to worry  .

Fast forward to this week ,now 2 months since first found the lump and went to doctor over another issue which I'm bring sent for an urgent scan for ,I mention neck lump ....now she's sayibgvik need a scan urgently on neck, andctgriws in we better have blood tests done to rule out anything sinister like cancer !! Now I'm worried!

Tomorrow I'll go for the blood tests , hospital rang me today  Sunday for a scan of womb , yes that's quick finds Friday! But what I  really want is the neck scan !! I feel well apart from this lump ,I'm wondering if it's at all connected to the root canal? I've had a funny on going ear infection for ages but that's the left ear and neck lump is on right side.

Have done lots of googling and if course I'm now very worried ! Lump feels like a marble and hurts if I press on it .

Anyone with similar lumps ? I'm just very worried now

  • Hi Canadalover. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor.

You would not be human if you were not worried, but there are numerous reports on this site from people who've had long term swollen lymph nodes which were eventually proven to be harmless reactions to infection.  Nodes can and do remain swollen for months, long after the infection that caused them to swell has been handled by the immune system. That said, you were right to raise this with your doctor, and the doctor was right to send you for an ultrasound, but that does not mean that cancer is a done deal - far from it.  I know it's easy for me to say try not to worry, but nevertheless....

You ask whether the lymph node can be a result of the root canal.  I'm no expert on dentistry, but on very rare occasions a root canal can go wrong. Perhaps a piece of file breaks off and can't be removed (but your dentist would have told you if that were the case) or despite the dentist's best attentions, some infection creeps into the tooth where it continues to fester.  I think if I were in your situation, I would wait for the result of lymph node to come back, and if it's all clear (fingers crossed) then go back to the dentist and ask for a X-ray on the tooth to see whether the root filling is stable or is changing.

Please tell us how you get on.
