Worried about oral cancer

For reference, I'm 26 and a smoker (around 7 a day).

For the last year or so I've noticed some lumps and bumps around the right side of my jaw, a bit under my ear. At first there was a large lump there, but this subsided over a week or so. Now though there are lumps present that aren't on the other side.

Coupled with this, I've been having intermittent throat pain. It isn't a sore pain, and it doesn't persist, it's just a wave of pain for a second or so, but this has been worrying me for a while. Finally I've noticed some ulcers on my tongue that I get every month or so. I could be imagining this but I've just noticed it recently and don't know if it's serious or not. They don't tend to come up in the same places every time.

I don't think I have any other "common" symptoms. e.g. no trouble or pain swallowing, no hoarse voice,no coughing or tastes of blood or anything, but I'm still worried and wanted to know what everyone thought. I've got an appointment with my GP in a few weeks about it.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I'm just very anxious about it!

  • Hello BarkerBoo

I'm sorry to hear that you have some health concerns at the moment. It's understandable that you're worried and I'm pleased to hear that you've arranged an appointment with your GP as they will be best placed to arrange an examination and any tests or referrals that may be appropriate.

In the meantime, please do give Google a wide berth as you won't find firm answers to your situation and it will leave you feeling more anxious. You might find it helpful to have a look at the NHS web info for some advice and tips to help you cope whilst waiting for your appointment.

I hope that the GP is able to give you some reassurance soon.

    best wishes,
