Worried about lymphoma

I’ve had swollen lymph nodes on my neck for the last month now - my right one is particularly swollen, even the doctor seemed pretty surprised when she seen and felt it. I also have a swollen lymph node at my groin. About 3 weeks ago I had a fever, severe night sweats, chills and a sore head. All of these symptoms went away after about a week. However I am still exhausted all the time and my body feels extremely week - especially my arms. I’ve also become very itchy over the last week, mostly my arms and my chest and my stomach has been very bloated despite not eating very much. Over the last year I have lost 3 stone, but no drastic weight loss over the last month.

Whenever I google my symptoms (I know I shouldn’t) lymphoma always seems to come up. I got my bloods taken on Monday, just waiting for the results they will hopefully come in tomorrow but I am just very worried! A lot of the posts I have read say that lymphoma is often mistaken for other less serious health issues and I just want to make sure that doesn’t happen! I’m not even sure if lymphoma would show up in a blood test?

Any advice or anybody going through the same type of thing with the same symptoms would be appreciated xx

  • Hi! Sorry you have been brought to this site. I see your post was at 3am aswell :(

I am in the same situation and waiting to see a hematologist. I have had fever and chills on and off for 3 months now! I also have swollen nodes in my neck too. All my bloods are normal. The waiting and not knowing is so hard to deal with. Please try and stay off google. Although I dont follow my own advice! I find it hard in my spare time not to spend it googling but it does nothing but convince me I must have lymphoma.

Maybe phone your doctors and see if your bloods are back yet?

  • Hey, thanks for replying! Sorry to hear you are in the same situation too :(

I just had an appointment with the doctor there, all my bloods came back normal, but she has referred me to a lump neck clinic so I’ll just be waiting to hear back from them now. She said I should be 30% worried about lymphoma... which I felt was actually quite high

Hope you hear back soon and everything goes well for you!

  • Im sorry she has worried you. I wonder why she says 30%, I know it sounds high but you have more chance than it isnt lymphoma than it is so try to keep that in mind! I know its so hard not to worry though!

Do you have any idea how big your neck lump is? Mine is deep so im unsure. My doctor referred me to hematology under a red flag 2 week wait, but they downgraded it to urgent which is an 8 week wait. But they are understaffed and still hasnt been able to give me an appt yet!

  • I know you’re right! Trying to think positively!

I’m not sure how big it is, it feels quite big to touch though and is also really tender. 8 week wait that’s annoying that you’re having to wait that long :( hopefully you get one soon! I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get an appointment either!

  • It's good the symptoms you had went away, the sweats, chills etc. Do you still have the itching? Also, your lump being tender is another good sign. Hopefully you arent waiting too long to be seen! Im hoping I get a call next week about an appt, if not I'm going back to my doctor!

  • Hello

So sorry you've got these symptoms of concern and even more sorry that your gp doesn't seem to have said much to allay them! I am quite surprised she gave you a figure of 30% - it seems a bit unusual to give that to you there before you've had a specialist review you.

When I was referred to my lymphoma team my GP just said I was being referred to lymphoma for the 2 week referral, didn't give any stats there.

Take comfort in that the GP has done the right thing and you should soon be getting some tests done that will give you answers one way or another.

I know, it's a horrible time this not knowing period, so feel free to rant as much as you like.

Be assured that even if it is lymphoma, lymphoma can be a very treatable disease with many different treatment plans available. Also it is often slow growing and so any delay in your referrals or getting any diagnosis won't impact prognosis.

Maybe keep a symptom diary and a list of questions for the next time when you speak to the specialist. Those meetings are usually overwhelming and I always forget what I'm going to ask, so take my questions down in a book and tell them at the beginning of the meeting I have questions that I might ask at the end if we don't cover off the answers during the meeting.

    Be firm and strong.

    You've got this.

And it could be so many other things, they tested me for all kinds of things because they show up the same symptoms - random blood problems, viruses, even standard STDs bring out similar symptoms (not that I'm implying you have one, just that the symptoms are often pretty much the same).

    Wishing you well

    Keep in touch

    Rose

  • Hey sorry I’ve not been on this!

Yeah i am still getting very itchy, mainly my arms and legs now, it’s not constant but it comes and goes and I’ve never really been itchy before so it’s very unusual. Yeah I read that the lumps being tender are a good sign.. I had two swollen lymph nodes on my neck and now the smaller one has actually gotten bigger and is really quite painful. I’m still extremely tired as well, putting that down to not eating as much as I should be hopefully. Have another doctors appointment tomorrow as a check up so I will let her know about all this again, still not heard from the clinic!

How are you getting on? Did you get a call? Are you still having all the same symptoms?

  • Hi Rose

Thankyou so much for taking the time to write to me, you have really helped to make me feel a lot better!! I will write down questions I have just now for my doctor tomorrow morning, thanks so much for the advice! I always come out forgetting to have asked things so this will really help!

Im still waiting to hear from the neck lump clinic, but I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow as a check up so I will let’s her know that I’m still extremely tired, weak, itchy and have really swollen painful lymph nodes in my neck.

i just read your page and I’m so sorry to hear that you have lymphoma, I hope everything is going well for you! You seem very strong and positive which is incredible! If you don’t mind me asking were your symptoms similar to mine? How did you discover that you had lymphoma?

Thanks so much again for replying, it really means a lot!
