Why can’t they get his pain relief right!

need a rant!

dad went into hospital five days ago with a suspected chest infection.

while on a&e he was in pain but the staff refused to give him his usual dose of morphine. He takes prn oramorph 20ml and is also on long acting twice a day. Dad had been confused and a bit flat prior to admission. When I told a nurse he was in pain and wanted pain killers she said he’d already had this morning (his long acting) and didn’t need any more. By this time it was 7pm!! He’s been taking between 3/4 does breakthrough while at home. The staff just didn’t believe he needed that amount of morphine and the reason he was flat and confused was due to the dose he was on....nothing at all to do with the infection! He was eventually moved to a ward over 24 hours later and still in pain...I contacted his Macmillan nurse in desperation who in turn contacted the acute team who came to see him and sorted things out.

Much better.

tonight he had breakthrough morphine at 6pm and was in pain again at 7.30pm...my mother requested a dose for him and was refused. The nurse said he could only have it at ten pm...every four hours!! And that she’d get him some ibuprofen!  My mum is so distressed tonight over the whole thing...we are literally climbing the walls!

ive told her I will go with her in the morning and hunt the palliative care team done to see if they can sort it and was also thinking of asking to speak to the sister in charge....

would anyone on here do the same thing? I’m so cross. My poor mother has been led to doubt herself about the doses she was giving him for the first three days and I had to really reassure her and find evidence to say no your right their wrong!

I’m so stress over the situation. It’s so unfair that a grown man should be reduced to almost begging for pain relief.

  • If I was in your shoes, I think I would be feeling exactly the same. It's no wonder that you're feeling so stressed and in need of a jolly good rant.

I don't feel I can offer any advice, but it does seem sensible to see if you can have a conversation with the palliative care team and the sister in charge.

    Good luck! x

  • Hi, we had the same thing with my mum, she had breast cancer with bone and liver mets, she got admitted after going to A&E with an irregular heart beat, she had a patch and was taking oral oxycodon throughout the day to manage her pain, her oxycodone was stopped while she was in, and she was in terrible pain, we also asked them to give her her oxycodon dose but they wouldn't, instead they gave her paracetamol to top up, they increased her patch but that didn't help, they increased it too much and she become terribly confused and talked alot of nonsense, this was the last straw for us and we told them we wanted the palliative care doctor to come and see our mum, they came and thankfully they sorted her pain and tried to fix the confusion, they put her on a syringe driver with alfentanil for the pain and haloperidol for the confusion and yes she was pain free, we knew it had worked because the nurses told us she was getting out of bed at night wandering around the ward, she even tried to climb out of the window to get home, sadly she passed a few days later but those last few days were pain free thanks to the palliative team, so I would say Yes insist on the palliative team to see your dad, we did and they really  helped our mum. Good luck, hope it all goes well for you and reduces you and your mums terrible stress.
