My friend has just been diagnosed with cancer. I'm in shock so didn't take everything he told me in and wasn't sure what to ask.

Just wondering if someone could help with one specific question please. My friend has lung cancer which has spread to the spine. Does this automatically imply stage 4 or is it possible for the lung cancer to have spread and for it to be considered an earlier stage cancer?
